We Are Not Alone

I’ve been waiting for one of the Underground stations near me to open since I moved into my current flat. When I first arrived in London, Queensway was due to open in May (with my own guess being the end and not the start of the month). It’s now not due to open until the second week of June now, even after a year of planned work and an entire month to get it right. Wembley stadium is yet another great example of a construction project way off schedule – and so I find it rather strange that people continually try to make out that the construction industry is any better planning than in our industry of building software.

  1. Public sector construction projects are always late and over budget. You rarely hear anything about private sector ones, like the new Arsenal stadium or one of the various new skyscrappers in London, which are on time and on budget.

Be realistic about what you’re trying to achieve, then it’s a lot easier to meet the plan.

  2. I believe the Wembley Stadium project is down to private aussie company Multiplex…

  3. Yes, Multiplex were apparently quite foolish taking up the project – not quite heeding the warning that the other bidders withdrew. I believe they might go bust as well simply from the late fees!

Miles – I agree totally with you that you need to be realistic about what you’re trying to achieve. It’s just interesting that all industries can suffer the same problems if they avoid to heed basic principals.
