A breakfast at point blank

I’d heard a fair amount of good things about the Gun Shop Cafe at West End from a number of people and thanks to Sarah, was finally able to experience all these good things today. Try to get past all the things that might actually detract from your experience such as having to wait for a table (they do not take bookings) and the not-so-attentive wait-staff because the food is definitely worth it. The menu was a simple, printed menu, something that we all joked about (maybe hoping) it being an indicator that they changed regularly.

The meals are a decent price and all five of us who went came out feeling quite full. Mike had the three cheese omelette (apparently a bit too much cheese even for him), Dan had the Canadian style French Toast (it comes with Bacon and Maple Syrup), Ben had the bacon, mushrooms, tomato and turkish bread served with pesto while Sarah and I had the French Toast served with a Berry Compote and fresh Organic Yogurt. The compote was a bit on the sickeningly sweet side, but with the yogurt and the french toast helped to balance it out. We all tried out a side Hash Cake which Sarah had recommended and it was an excellent addition to the breakfast. What a great way to start a Saturday!

  1. True Patrick, they do have the world’s greatest breakfasts.
But, terrible story, my boyfriend and I had been looking forward all week to our regular Gun Shop breakfast…on Sunday morning we were up bright and early with tummies rumbling as we grabbed the paper and headed off, excited about having another brilliant brekky…only to find a sign on the door: “Due to downsizing we are no longer doing Sunday breakfasts”!!!
Well we were just gobsmacked. What a travesty, and an absolute tragedy for Brisbane breakfastities. We felt so robbed.
We went down the road to the Pavilion, which has provided us with many a late-night chocolate martini, but their breakfasts just aren’t up to scratch. My poached eggs were barely solid, the whites were very runny and hardly cooked. Pete said his pancakes were OK, but a mere 2 on the scale compared to the Gun Shop’s 11 out of 10!! All in all, a sad day. Oh Gun Shop, why, why??!?!?! Please come back to us. Brisbane needs you…

  2. Due to downsizing! That’s not only ridiculous but terrible! How can a top place like that stop serving breakfast when it is probably the busiest place in town! That is really just so wrong and terribly horrible to hear about. Thanks for your comment though (despite the bad news).

  3. on the contrary, i think it’s a brave and rad thing for Gun Shop- they’ve acknowledged their popularity and in turn rewarded their staff for it. not only is it a good idea to cut cost (i doubt that was a main reason though), but imagine how great a business would run with happy and relaxed staff! well imagine no more!

this hasn’t even detered their fave customers. weekday breakfasts at the gunshop continue with their mad rush for suits and brekky meetings.i think they’ve done well indeed. good on ya, Justine!
