Lovebox 2011

I so wasn’t up for a big day a Lovebox. I was just utterly exhausted and on top of that the rain until about 3pm was pretty torrential. Still I’d kitted myself out with some gumboots especially for the gig so I thought at least I should make an appearance.

To be fair by the time Laney and I turned up to meet E-Yen, Jo and Ros the weather had cleared up so at least it wasn’t raining anymore. Unfortunately the Lovebox grounds were an absolutely mudbath. Kind of fun in its own way but I was mega glad I had my wellies.

The headline acts at today’s session were Blondie, Scissor Sisters with the finale featuring 2 Many DJs. Is it terrible to admit that Laney and I didn’t even make it to the Blondie session (which started at roughly 6pm?) Seriously – I just physically couldn’t stand anymore.

Still we enjoyed a few of the other acts including the hilarious and hugely entertaining Beth Ditto who, after a costume change or two, proceeded to get her gear off during her session and also climbed into the crowd (after she put on her clothes that is)! What an entertainer! Unbelievably her voice lost no volume or pitch throughout all the physical moving – what an beautiful voice she has.

Dave Leaving Do and Pride

Dave Chan departs the UK shores tomorrow for the land down under so, in tradition, he had some leaving drinks. I think it was a bold move to have leaving drinks the night before a flight that would effectively last 24 hours … a very bold move indeed! Dave’s drinks were at Thirst – one of the Chinese Crew’s favourite venues for cocktails … specifically Pina Coladas. And I could see why – those pina coladas were very potent! Ironically I don’t have many photos of the main man Dave!

Thirst actually ended up being a perfect venue to choose as we were right in the heart of Soho and right in the middle of Pride celebrations! It was a fantastic atmosphere out on the street and a more perfect evening you couldn’t ask for. Everyone was in a fantastic movie – everyone was dancing with everyone, everyone was snogging everyone and everyone was feeling up everyone (okay, that might have just been me under the influence of alcohol … 😉 )

This guy was just nuts, but funny!

Fabulous night people!

Wimbledon 2011

Akh proved he once again has the lucky charm when it comes to winning Wimbledon tickets. This year he couldn’t go so I was very lucky that he offered them to me. Best thing was that it was on middle Saturday on Centre Court so not only did I not have to take a day off, we were also guaranteed some high caliber matches.

I met D fairly early so we could have a look at what was going on around the outside courts. A group of protesters in the queue, however, held us up a little bit – officials had decided to shut the gates so gate opening time was delayed for nearly an hour. I was impressed that the protesters were identified – apparently they had paint and other stuff hidden in bags to make their protest banners. This didn’t delay the start of play, however, nor dissuade anyone from visiting Wimbledon. There were sooo many people inside already by the time we made it inside the gates.

The weather, though a little bit sketchy this past week, had been clear enough that matches had been moving on schedule so as a result many of the outside courts had mostly doubles and junior matches. The biggest star that we saw, that I knew at any rate, was Tamarine Tanasugarn who was playing a doubles match. Because Wimbledon was so crowded today it was actually quite difficult to get around to many of the courts to see many other matches. Just as well D and I had our centre court tickets!

Our seats on centre court weren’t quite the last row … but they practically were! I didn’t mind though because it meant that I could come to Wimbledon. The good thing about our seats were that we were sat with a view of the Royal Box – and today a whole heap of sports starts were in the box including Martina Navratilova, Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Kelly Holmes, Jonathan Edwards, Sachin Tendulkar, Sir Roger Bannister, Amy Williams (won gold at the Winter Olympics if you don’t know) and a whole host of rugby, football and cricket stars. We were also marking Armed Forces Day so there were 14 members of the armed forces, nominated for exceptional service, in the box.

Three matches on Centre court for us today. First up was women’s number one seed Caroline Wozniacki who defeated Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova fairly handily but I must say that I felt that Jarmila lost the match more than Caroline won it. Though Caroline had some good shots – it was Jarmila who was going for everything. Unfortunately her unforced errors outweighing her winners meant she went down … but at least she went down fighting.

Next up on court was Roger Federer who outclassed David Nalbandian. Roger was just pure class and it was great to see him so comfortable in his element. There is just such an ease to his game and its like he can just turn the power or touch on just like that.

And yes, there were the shirt taking off moments too …

Final game of the match was Novak Djokovic (the number two seed this year) against Marcos Baghdatis. I really find it hard to like Novak. In today’s match he came across a spoilt little boy, he even broke his racquet! Nice butt though …

Marcos did well to keep up with Novak but the actually game wasn’t the kind of match that was very entertaining even if it was quite a close one. There were lots of long drawn out and often unexciting rallies. D and I left at the end of the third set!

Royal Ascot 4.0

This year is the first year that we’ve been to Royal Ascot where the weather has been really sh!tty – that didn’t stop us (and many others) from making the most of the day though and, actually, it was quite nice to change things up a little bit. Never mind the fact that I destroyed my shoes (my brand new heels!) within the first half an hour of being track-side! Ha ha. Just as well I’d brought another pair of shoes (flats) and my thongs! LOL!

Getting to Ascot is always a good move any year but in particular this year when space under tents and tables were at the premium. We were rather amused to watch the people around us and how people were sneaking chairs away from tables where they could!

It was pretty civil to begin with …

… but got very crowded and crazy later on …

… and I love this moment where we were surrounded by the granny brigade! I felt bad about not giving them our seats but they soon found seating around us anyway.

Due to the rain this was the closest I go to the Queen this year. She was in a lovely peach outfit and was looking very bright considering the weather on the outside.

The weather might have been a downer but the race results were pretty good for me this year. Was it because I’d promised the guys at work that I’d donate all winnings to their 100km walking effort in the South Downs? In either case my race plan of choosing by name and choosing horses with larger odds worked quite well with wins in four out of six races. And its always nice to win on the last race of the day – so was very happy to be celebrating along with owner of the horse Mark Owen 🙂

The boys and I had a lovely day and we’re looking forward to Ascot 2012. Let’s hope for better weather though!

Socialite Workshop Party at Graffik

Socialite London has been around for a couple of years now and was set up as a members club to organise social events for members to mingle. Its aimed at young professionals who are perhaps wanting to expand their current social circle and in some ways it also seems to work as a singles mingles service the way it has profiles to “match” you to people who have similar interests, work / live in your area, etc. Su Yin invited me to an event they were holding tonight at the Graffik Gallery. I’ve never been into the Gallery before even if its in my hood – and I must admit the gallery, showcasing urban art, is quite cool.

Tonight’s event was a Workshop Party by Peter Dunne. Peter Dunne is a self-taught artist from Dublin with a particular skill in spray can painting. A skill he discovered when he was commissioned to do 300 pieces in a month and discovered he was only able to do it with spray painting. Think Banksy. Think those artists you see on the sidewalk who can create special images with just a few shakes of a spray can. This was what we were going to be learning tonight, gloves and face masks supplied.

In addition to the workshop we were promised a drinks reception and BBQ. They were very good at topping up everyone’s glasses or making the drink available to everyone but the BBQ was a shambles. There wasn’t any sort of order and the guy manning the BBQ wasn’t concerned about serving everyone in any sort of order. Fail number one.

Fail number two related to the actually spray painting part of the evening. The idea of the party was great, but the pulling it off was not so great. I’m not sure whether it was because more people turned up than expected by the space to watch the debrief and do the actual painting was very small. I was lucky to get a front spot for the debrief – I feel for those behind who probably couldn’t see anything!

To help with the painting Pete had also brought along plenty of templates and other tools. Although some people got quite creative and were building their own templates!

Then we moved on to the bit where we got to do our own painting. This really was a bit disorganised, not very well planned and not at all rehearsed. Because of the small space available in the court yard and the supplies, realistically only 4 or 5 people could paint at once (and there would have been about 20+ who paid to paint tonight.) Therefore, if you were an A-type personality and were willing to push your way to the front so to speak (and this went for both food and the art itself) then you’d be fine. The first group went in and they spent absolutely ages trying to paint something, if they didn’t like it they would start again, or if they were particularly selfish, would paint 3 or 4! After this had gone on for some time I could see that one of the organizers, the Nicole or something her name was, did eventually try to reign in the time people were spending painting but it was too late. It didn’t also help that the artist was quite friendly and willing to spend time individually – I mean it was nice that Pete was so friendly but he didn’t help with the turnover so to speak.

I had resigned myself earlier on to just watching, which really, was entertaining enough. There were some appallingly aggressive people at the event who were perfectly sociable and nice to talk to but put something in front of them and suddenly they turned a bit selfish. A couple of girls were treating the artist like their own special tutor forgetting there were actually other people who should have had a go too. The worst bit was when people started shouting for the paint cans instead of asking nicely for them – Black! Orange! Blue!

At least Su Yin and Shahid got in and painted something. That too was particularly amusing as Shahid was being competitive about whose painting was better. Boys!

London Marathon 2011

James and I went down to support Jules and D run the London Marathon this year. I swear each year we have to get up earlier and earlier just to get a good spot at the marathon to see our runners.

The fact that Jules and D had quite disparate running times meant we were out by the side of the road for a long stretch. Just as well the sun was out … so I could work on my tan at the same time. Heh heh.

Well done boys.

Duck and Free B&J Ice Cream

Sandra and I met up for a Crispy Duck date tonight … cute fishies …

.. I didn’t think we’d ordered that much to eat over dinner until I went to go and claim a free Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and was halfway through it before starting to feel super full. Sandra was on a no dessert plan for Lent she handed me her ice cream too! It was a real struggle to get through them both!

Every year B&J have this Free Cone Day. It’s a great marketing ploy to raise their profile. The odd thing is that they don’t even limit how many cones you can have. I was speaking to two people in line and one of them had been moving through the queue since 3pm and when I was speaking to him was currently waiting for this 16th cone! The other girl was on her 9th! Crazy what people would do for free foods!

Experimental Food Spectacular: Food’s Past and Future

And for something a little educational … but still involving food of course. Heh heh. The VA& in conjunction with The Experimental Food Society organised a lecture tonight on the The Past and Future of Food and Experimentation. The evening started, logically, with the past as presented by Professor Roland Rotherham, a known food historian, and Master Chef and Butter Sculptor Simon Smith. Professor Roland started the talk and then, after referencing a favourite dish of his, Simon would do a demonstration. This part of the talk was actually a little slow for me. Professor Roland was funny enough and sure he gave us some interesting facts but it just wasn’t that exciting I’ve never been a great history student! And the food demonstration was less than thrilling too as there was no electricity allowed in the lecture room so all Simon could make was salads.

The second half of the evening was much more interesting and really grabbed my attention. Food Futurologist Dr Morgaine Gaye took us through what we could expect in food over the next 18 months. Some of her predictions were way out there but in a very exciting way. She predicted such developments as:

  • Chocolate that would clean your teeth at the same time you ate it
  • A greater focus on those foods which are multi-functional
  • People actually being able to grow their own meat in the way we grow vegetables – apparently NASA started the investment into research into this and then PETA took it over. (Tip:Google “Cocoon grow meat” and you’ll find heaps of articles from 2009 regarding this concept cooker)
  • Chocolate covered bacon
  • We should see insects hitting our plates big time
  • Food coming from vending machines – in Japan I’ve already seen that you can have cans of hot coffee or chocolate from the vending machine, in Amsterdam you can get foods like burgers and chips, but Dr Morgaine was predicting that you could actually choose your ingredients and the machine could produce your meal for you
  • South America is going to be a big influence on our eating
  • Alfajor, kind of like jaffa cakes, are going to be the new Cupcake
  • Food science. Clearly the molecular dining of places such as El Bulli and Fat Duck have already been a hit in recent times. But there will be a move toward even more utilization of science through chocolate syringes, food tattoos and scratch and sniff food
  • Ice Cream Sandwiches – Dad you’re ahead of your time. Dad was making us ice cream sandwiches from when we were little tots
  • Geometry will feature in the way we present food. E.g. Pizza Cones. They looked pretty cool on the slideshow she had. Things coming in balls.
  • Olfactory themes – so people indulging in jus the smell of food. She predicts there will be USBs which can be used to emit smells
  • Absolutely fascinating! The talk was worth it just for that part of the night. Actually, I was rather surprised at the types of people in the audience. There were a heap of what seemed to be students – they were all fastidiously taking notes. I felt like a student again!

If there was one disappointment of the evening it was in the catering/refreshments. I was expecting more than the free wine/juice and small cakes by the POP bakery. I thought there might have been more exciting items on offer – such as the chocolate covered bacon!

    P & B’s Wedding

One of the reasons I was back in Oz was for Pauline and Brendan’s wedding which I was honoured to be a part of. My biggest worry was fitting into the bridesmaid dress that Pauline had made in Melbourne – mainly because of the amount of eating I’ve been doing recently! Ha ha!

Weddings are no small thing that’s for sure – even my part of the wedding. There were the dress fittings and dress pick-ups (apparently I got off lightly with only two fittings – the other girls had to go at least four times and their dresses were still too long and missing padding!), pedicures and manicures, wedding rehearsals, hair to get done, make up to get done etc. But I didn’t mind all this as it meant I got to spend more time with Pauline. I was happy to see it was like she’d never left London – we were both still pretty much the same. I met her Mum for the first time as well and boy was she hilarious. I don’t think I stopped laughing – I can see why Pauline is so down to earth.

Oh, celeb sighting! But no photo unfortunately. After we’d had the Wedding Rehearsal we grabbed a quick dinner at Wagamama. And, eating completely on his own was Tom Williams who is probably known best for hosting The Great Outdoors. This was my attempt at a stalker photo when he was sitting in the waiting area waiting for a takeaway:

But I completely missed him! Sigh. What a hottie.

The night before the wedding we bridesmaids stayed with Pauline at her mother’s house – which was probably a good move considering we had to get up at the crack of dawn to have enough time to get our hair and our make up. Yes The Wedding Day was rather a long day but everything went very smoothly and all of Pauline’s planning was worth it.

Long though it was, the Day itself was actually a fairly relaxed day considering. We even had time to watch some Sex And the City episodes when we were getting ready prior to getting to the Church which was on in the background for inspiration. Getting our dresses on were the hardest – the buttons on those things were impossible but worth if for the impact on the dress, and getting Pauline’s wedding dress on was an exercise in creativity. Her dress was simply gorgeous and looked stunning.

In comparison to everything else going on during the day the wedding ceremony seemed to just whizz by – I think its nice when the ceremony doesn’t drag on too long though Pauline had a couple of guest readings including one by Leah. Being in the wedding I couldn’t really stalkerazzi the wedding but I did poach a few photos from other people:

The photographer that Pauline had hired was very fast when taking photos. It was like we’d barely got into position and smiled and he was off organising the next shot. He liked the technique of getting us to laugh and talk amongst us so that the photos aren’t of us just stiffly smiling for the camera and should seem more natural type poses.

The Reception was held at Port Melbourne Yacht Club. An absolutely dazzling venue on the sparkling water, especially as the sun started to descend.

Food was delicious. I didn’t mind that the starter of Lemongrass Beef came with salad (heh heh) – beef was mouth wateringly yummy and followed by the Chicken served with Black Truffle Butter. Divine. There was also a cheesecake later on but by then most people were off on the dance floor or drunk somewhere. Pauline, however, made sure to grab me so we could enjoy the dessert. A woman after my own heart!

Speeches were good and touching. Both Pauline’s speech and her Mum’s speech had me teary. Cake-cutting went off without a hitch and then the dancing.

I don’t think Pauline and Brendan could have had taller groomsmen. Very funny to be dancing with the tallest one! Pauline and Brendan had rehearsed a very special wedding dance. So sweet!

I’m thinking Pauline and Brendan had an amazing day by all accounts. Congratulations kids!

    2010 Christmas Season continues

An almost literal all day Christmas party that lasted from 10 this morning to past midnight nearly stretched the limits of my soci-ability. Ha. Just kidding – it was my feet that couldn’t take the heat – I blame the dancing at the Walkie … but I had a fantastic day seeing and spending the day from people from my ex-workplace.

We started the day off with a very entertaining quiz that was organised by James which my team won! Heh heh. I was surprised how many people were in the pub even at 10 in the morning!

We then moved on to lunch at Café Rouge at Leicester Square. Lunch was pretty good except for the fact that they didn’t get our desserts out in the right order and in the right quantity.

We had a great time with our Secret Santa’s with some people coming up with some creative gifts, especially these toy soldiers which proved to be a big hit with everyone … well, at the “younger” end of the table at least. 😉

The Temple Walkie was next after lunch (which actually finished around 4.30.) It’s the tradition to meet up with the other groups who have had their respective Christmas lunches elsewhere. I was amazed that the Walkie was filled with men men men. It wasn’t until much later that more ladies turned up but the ration was still heavily in favour of the men.

    The obligatory boyfriend shot:
