Roast and Duplo – great ways to spend an afternooon

I worked up quite an appetite trekking around seeing all these lovely buildings for OpenHouse so it was with great delight that I landed on Nate and Caro’s doorstep for another beautiful roast prepared by Caro. She really should think about opening up a restaurant! But then … no doubt a food blogger will pick it up, her food will get all trendy and I’ll never get a booking! Ha!

I love visiting Nate and Caro. Not only do I get a proper feed, get a chance to catch up on all the goss in their lives but I also get to play with their adorable little darlings, Gas and Ces. Both are growing up so quickly and I’m honoured I get to spend time with them at this precious time of their life. Ces may be growing up too fast with his cigar …

… just kidding. He sure likes those breadsticks though!

Gas’s duplo train set got a work out, and we got to see what Dad Nate’s engineering skills were like .. um … maybe stick to your day job Dad? Just kidding again (sort of – heh heh). Nate made a decent enough track with the train … too bad Gas was most interested in destroying things!

Ces wanted to get in on the act too. Bless he is starting to turn over on to his stomach now. Won’t be long before he is up and running everywhere!

And then Gas did the most gorgeous thing ever – he started to play with my hair like he was a hair dresser – working my hair until it was “just right”. Soooo cute!

Wimbledon Doggies

After the Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium shut down the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium remains the only doggie race track in London. I’ve been meaning to go there for a while now but somehow time got away. However, a Groupon offer of £8 for admission for two including a drink and burger each was just too good an offer to pass up. So, I rounded up some troops and off we were.

Getting to the race track is supposed to be quite simple, even by public transport and merely involves taking the train/district line to Wimbledon and then catching a bus … that is, if said bus actually turns up! We waited, with a ton of other people, for over half an hour for the bus to turn up but soon lost patience and hopped in a cab instead. Infinitely quicker and easier and at about £10 for the trip it was not so prohibitively expensive when split between 3-4 people.

Our experience at Wimbledon was vastly different to Walthamstow – where at Walthamstow we’d had comfortable seats and tables from which to view the race track, because we arrived late there were no tables or spare seating left so we made our way instead down to the race track itself. This actually proved to be fun in its own way as you get to see the dogs up close and personal … though it did start to get quite crowded by the track as the night progressed.

As cool as it was to see the dogs we were all there for a wee gamble and (hopefully) a win. I hadn’t really remembered much from my visit to Walthamstow as to how to choose a winning dog and I certainly hadn’t remembered how quickly the races were run! It seemed that just as one race was run the next one was nearly about to start again. As for winning – everyone has their tactics (bet on the big dog, bet on the inside dog, always bet on dog no.2 etc. etc.) but really it all comes down to luck most of the time. Taking a lead from Philomena (who ended up the biggest winner of the night) betting on a win actually wasn’t enough, you really had to start betting on two- or even three-dog combinations if you really wanted to make a decent return. This certainly made it more challenging!

In the end there were winners and losers … but the most important thing was that everyone seemed to have fun!

Another Day Another Casino

Casinos really aren’t a big thing in London but if you know where to look you can certainly find them. The Empire Casino in Leicester Square is probably the most obvious and high profile one that I know about, and about six months ago I met up with the lads (James, D, Wongo, Grant) at the Palm Beach Casino near Green Park. They decided it was time for another outing so here we were.

The staff at the the front desk were much friendlier than the ones at the Palm Beach Casino and didn’t seem to get at all affected by the business of the front desk registration. Unlike the Empire Casino, they do require you to sign up and become a member.

The Grosvenor seemed very busy – but as this was my first visit I had nothing to measure it against. Surprisingly there was a large proportion of people just eating/drinking (as a percentage of those gambling.) We didn’t stay very long … long enough for D to get us all a round of drinks though when he came up trumps in roulette. In fact, he was the only one that had success tonight! Thanks D for the drink!

Warrick

And a visit to London wouldn’t be complete for Rache if we didn’t take her out for one last drink and dance. Venue of choice was the Warrick which, if not being particularly exciting in the basement area in terms of people, had a pretty good DJ at least. A good happy hour too which was surprisingly available on a Saturday!

And yes it did get teary …

Mushroom Nachos

Emma is sadly leaving our team so, as is tradition, had leaving drinks. The Hop Poles is a pretty good venue for drinks being quite close to the station and also having some pretty good snacks at reasonable prices. For the most part the snacks are good anyway … this plate of mushroom nachos being a bit odd.

Even odder the whole thing was accompanied by barbecue sauce! Still, it went down very well with everyone!

Jenny BBQ

Jenny has had a pretty amazing year this year with a new job, a new engagement (!) and a new house (!!) And with her birthday just having gone by a couple of weeks ago today she was having a celebration barbeque at her new home … which was a very lengthy journey on the tube (all the way to the end of the central line) and then a taxi at the other end! Not that I minded – she, after all, has to make quite an effort to come in central to do stuff with me.

She’d been blessed with some pretty damn fine weather and, if she’d had a pool, it would have been perfect conditions to don our cossies! We had to settle for walking barefoot in the grass and lounging around in her fairly sizable backyard. She’d gone to sooo much effort with the food. I love that about Jenny – she just gets so excited about her food. And they had sooooo much meat. Sean was on the barbie all afternoon and into the early evening grilling stuff for everyone. Not sure how many people turned up as it was a mixture of Jenny’s and Sean’s friends but it had to have at least been 45 people if I had to guess at a minimum?

A fun day.

Drinkies at TGIF

I didn’t fancy anything “fancy” for dinner tonight so convinced the girls to head over to TGIF for dinner instead of Gaucho’s as it still gave us the option for food plus some pretty awesome cocktails. To say it was busy tonight was a total understatement, it was spilling over with all these tourists! ha ha. We waited nearly an hour for a table! At least we had good music and good drinks to occupy!

Dave Leaving Do and Pride

Dave Chan departs the UK shores tomorrow for the land down under so, in tradition, he had some leaving drinks. I think it was a bold move to have leaving drinks the night before a flight that would effectively last 24 hours … a very bold move indeed! Dave’s drinks were at Thirst – one of the Chinese Crew’s favourite venues for cocktails … specifically Pina Coladas. And I could see why – those pina coladas were very potent! Ironically I don’t have many photos of the main man Dave!

Thirst actually ended up being a perfect venue to choose as we were right in the heart of Soho and right in the middle of Pride celebrations! It was a fantastic atmosphere out on the street and a more perfect evening you couldn’t ask for. Everyone was in a fantastic movie – everyone was dancing with everyone, everyone was snogging everyone and everyone was feeling up everyone (okay, that might have just been me under the influence of alcohol … 😉 )

This guy was just nuts, but funny!

Fabulous night people!

Covent Garden Cocktail Club

So apparently this is what happy hour at the Covent Garden Cocktail Club looks like. Heh heh.

And this is what happens to those who have consumed the drinks! It just doesn’t look right does it!

Spring Day at Southbank and the Tate Modern

I’m absolutely delighting in this lovely weather we are having at the moment. I met Nate, Caro, Gaspar and Cesar (he was sleeping most of it) for brunch at Giraffe at Southbank before taking a long stroll all the way to the Tate Modern to check out Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds.

Shame the Seeds are now cordoned off from the public (actually it was cordoned off within 48 hours!) It used to be open but too many people were stealing the little Seeds (apparently a single seed sold for £28 on ebay) and I also read somewhere the porcelain replicas were slightly poisonous. It was an impressive sea of seeds to behold!

This is something you also don’t see everyday, one of the London Eye capsules being towed around on the back of a boat!
