Jerry, Jerry

Profane. Vulgar. Obscene. Blasphemous. Over the Top.

Tonight Rehana and I went to check out Jerry Springer ? The Opera. I?d heard rave reviews about it but I couldn?t see how Jerry Springer ? the Talkshow was going to translate on to stage. The format was interesting with a touch of a musical, comedy and an opera. Jerry was the only character who spoke ? everyone else sang either normally or operatically. Though smartly written this format sometimes made it hard to understand exactly what was trying to be said.

The first half was typical Jerry: A man cheats on his long-term girlfriend with two other girls, one who turns out to be a man; A man cheats on his girlfriend because he has a fetish for dressing in a diaper that only ?Baby Jane? will cater to; A woman reveals she wants to be a pole dancer; the KKK make an appearance; and Jerry gets shot. The second half sees us venture into Hell and a confrontation between Satan, Jesus and God.

I could go on to describe in detail how shocking this performance was but it?s the kind of show that you need to go and see for yourself and make a call. Will you sit back and enjoy it for what it is or will you be one of those who sit through the performance not knowing whether to laugh it off or leave with your sanity intact?

Salzburg, Austria

Salzach 01 Salzach 02 Salzburg at Night

First words. Salzburg is a city steeped in history and time can be well spent just wandering around and exploring the nooks and crannies. Alternatively there are plenty of day trips that can be made to explore the local sights. I can?t wait to go back and see it in spring/summer.

Christmas Market 01 Christmas Market 02 Christmas Market 03

Dates Out of Stansted 6.40am Friday, 26 November
In to Stansted 10.25pm Sunday, 28 November
Airline Ryanair. This was my first time flying with this low-cost airline and it was not a bad experience at all. The biggest negative (next to having to fly out of Stansted) was unassigned seating! Yikes! It was basically a stampede to get through the gate to get to the plane.
Why go? Go if the Sound of Music, Mozart and Christmas Markets (at least from Nov until Christmas) sound appealing to you.
Weather Mainly cloudy cover but days were cool and dry.
The experience Waking up at 3am in the morning for a full day in another country was going to be tough. But when I arrived at the Salzburg W.A. Mozart Airport (named after Salzburg?s most famous son) and stepped off the plane to be faced with the beautiful mountain-scape and the brisk winter air I knew I was in for a good day. My travelling accomplices were already in Salzburg with Andrew, having arrived the morning before, and Carolyn and Mel, the night before so they were all well settled by the time I got to the hostel.

Day 1 was Mozart?s Residence (which has a good self-paced audio guided tour that gives you more information about Mozart than you have room in your brain for), the bustling Christmas markets and the Bavarian Mountains (that?s right when in Salzburg, why not visit Germany??). The tour was average as except for a little time at King?s Lake (K?ssee) and a stop in the town of Berchtesgaden (for the obligatory eat-some-apple-strudel-and-contribute-to-the-local-economy rest break) most of the tour was driving to and around the Alps. More time off the bus would have been appreciated.

Dinner was Wiener Schnitzel (of course) but I won?t go into how much drama was involved in finding dinner. Dinner is definitely not the main meal in Salzburg!

Day 2.The Sound of Music Tour! You cannot go to Salzburg and NOT do the Sound of Music Tour. In addition to learning heaps more about Salzburg and the Lakes District you will hear the true story behind the Sound of Music and some of the secrets behind the making of the movie, you get to visit many of the places the movie was filmed at and most importantly you get to sing sing sing. As an added bonus free Edelweiss seeds (now I know you?ve always wanted them!) are given to you at the end of the tour.

Day 3.The overcast weather from the day before had us planning for a Sound of Music morning (which showed at 10am daily at our hostel). However, the weather was enticingly clear enough for us to venture up to Festung (Fortress) Hohensalzburg. The Fortress is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. Those fit enough can walk up to the Fortress but we took the easy way up via the Furnicular. There is plenty to entertain once at the top of the Fortress including the Fortress museum, a marionette museum, a tour of the state rooms, the views and an opportunity to try your hand at cross bow.

Highlights
  • Sound of Music Tour (cheesy but good fun)
  • Festung Hohensalzburg (make sure you do the state rooms tour ? as part of the tour you end up at the top of the fortress with a 360 degree view of Salzburg)
  • Mirabellgarten
  • Colours of the Christmas markets
  • The Krampus Runs (Wild Spirits). Krampus is a scary looking goat-like creature that runs around and whips the evil spirits out of children and adults. Definitely entertaining to hear the shrieks (and giggling) around you as people try to dodge the Krampus.
  • Lowlights Missing out on going to the Ice Caves and The Trick Fountains of Hellbrunn Palace because we were out of season. (Oh well ? a nice excuse to go back!)
    Final words I’d go again!

What an awful week of walking. I don’t think I even averaged over 8k this week. Don’t have any excuse really. I could try and blame it on the weather as London actually got down to minium of 0 degrees on Saturday (average for the day was 2!). But other than that extremely freakily cold day temps have been hanging around 7-15 degrees. I’m of two minds whether to wish for snow or not. If it does snow I’m sure that London will crap itself. I mean, if mere leaves on the railway line are enough to cause massive delays on the tube, can you imagine what would happen to transportation as a whole if it snowed?!! Perhaps I’ll save my wishes for snow in New York instead.

The Incredibles – Pretty good but was it incredible?

The Incredibles opened with a small bizarre short piece of animation called Boundin? about a self-centred sheep who loves to dance and does so with much gusto. That is until he is shorn of his fleece and becomes a bit of a laughing stock. A bounding jackalope (of course) comes bounding along and perks him up. The writing is smart and was obviously funny for some. I?ve read somewhere that the short was used to test some new lighting techniques that will be seen in next year’s Cars. But on to the main show ?

The Incredibles starts with superheroes doing what they do best ? saving the world. However, in a reflection of today?s litigious society, a landslide of lawsuits soon forces the superheroes to go underground. Under the witness protection program the superheroes of yesterday are assigned new Joe Public personas. Fast-forward to 15 years later. Mr Incredible, alter ego Bob Parr, lives an ordinary surburban life with wife Helen, formerly Elastigirl, and their three children Violet, Dash and Jack Jack. We learn that Mr Incredible has found it difficult to give up the glory days and is constantly blowing his cover with his super hero antics. His latest job at an insurance firm is soon history as his frustration at not being able to help those in trouble overtakes him and he puts his boss through the wall ? several in fact. Naturally he is fired. When Mr. Incredible is offered the chance to play the role of hero again by a mysterious communication, he jumps at the opportunity, but when it turns out to be a trap set by an enemy, the whole family must jump in to save the day.

The movie starts off relatively slowly and it is not until the second half of the movie that the action starts in earnest. The writing is funny, intelligent and highly imaginative. As with any successful animation The Incredibles caters for adult and children alike ? plenty of adult themes and social commentary interwoven subtly into the story line. No need to even speak of the animation because you would expect the best coming from Pixar.

Overall it is a very good story and definitely a movie I would recommend. I?m not going to go overboard and say that it?s the best thing since sliced bread as it was a little slow at times, hence my title, but for the majority of the movie it was definitely very entertaining.

As a final comment, the look out for the very amusing E (Edna Mode), Superhero Fashion Designer. Voiced by the director-writer Brad Bird himself this lady is sassy, the epitome of high fashion and fantastic homage to Edith Head, the famous film wardrobe designer. “Ve must do this again soon, dahling. I do so love our visits.” She really lit up the screen.

Slight decrease from my average last week of 11,780 to 11,118. Still, it wasn’t too bad an effort. Going for walks at lunch or going out after work really seems to make a difference to the steps I take in a day. Most of Saturday’s effort was the result of walking for hours in Kensington Garden on a gorgeous Saturday morning taking photos for my travel writing and photography class. It really was a beautiful Autumn day.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

From a new concept movie (Sky Captain) to a new movie based on an old concept. I?m sure we?ve all seen the first Bridget Jones movie by now and here we have a second installment for those who couldn?t get enough of the first. Its pretty much more of the same. There was plenty of laughter from those in the theatre but it all sounded a little forced to me. Sure I laughed (a little) as well and the soundtrack is rocking but I?m not going to say it is an original script by any stretch of the imagination. Formula: Bridget Jones plus boyfriend, minus this boyfriend after they have a big fight, add the return of the irresistible bad boy and, not surprisingly, this equals Bridget at the start of Bridget Jones? Diary.

I kept myself entertained by all the opportunities taken for product placement. From a Coca-Cola sign in Piccadilly Circus, to the Galaxy chocolate bars Bridget gives out to some ? er ? fellow inmates, to the constant references to Madonna I was surprised at how blatant it was.

Overall, I?d rate the movie as quite average. There are some slight twists but not enough to drag it from the sequel blues. If London needs a clue on how to recycle properly then it needs to talk to the producers of this film who are apparently experts at it.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

I had absolute no idea what this movie was going to be about except that 1. Except for live actors working entirely on a London soundstage in front of a blue screen, the whole movie was filmed with CGI. 2. I totally dislike Gwyneth Patrow and 3. I could only just tolerate Jude Law as the hero (whoever said he would make a good James Bond was surely on drugs at the time!)

What I got was an interestingly shot comic book-style story about the world back in the late 1930s. Famous scientists are going missing around the world and major cities are coming under attack from giant robots. Yes ? it?s the age-old story of a man hell bent on world domination. Or so we assume.

I wish they had chosen some better leads ? Gwyneth was plain annoying, Jude Law didn?t have enough presence and Angelina Jolie ? strange performance from her. I know I?m being picky but she just smiled at the most inappropriate moments. I?ve definitely seen her act better. Giovanni Ribisi, in his all too brief appearances as the geek with the cool toys and the smarts to save the world, was the most pleasant actor to watch.

Since I wasn?t expecting too much I can honestly say I wasn?t disappointed. Don?t expect too much of a story (definitely a case of style over substance) and you?ll come out feeling the same way. The movie is unlike anything I have seen before and just for that I have to give it kudos. Go if you want to see something which will let you lose yourself in its rich imagery without the need to employ too much of the grey matter.

    Friend from home

I was so happy to see Ranita today. It is fair enough to exchange emails with people back home but to see and speak to someone in the flesh – it was really cool. On the one hand it really brought home how much I was missing everyone and Brisbane/Gold Coast, and on the other it really made me appreicate how lucky I am to be in London with all this opportunity to do … well, whatever I want. It also made me realise that I still have so much to do and so many places to visit. Its going to be a good next few months.

    Fuel, Covent Garden

I?m starting to think that Rehana and I are choosing the wrong nights and wrong times to visit these supposed R&B venues. Admittedly the 5.30-10.30 time frame we seemed to be choosing was not going to be party central but surely that shouldn?t stop the venues playing good music!

We arrived at Fuel at about 5.30 (me after my travel writing and photography class and Rehana after a hard day?s study). Fuel is located in the heart of Covent Garden and like many bars was extremely cosy. We were one of the first to arrive and we settled down with our jug of Sex on the Beach and I settled down to a very nice pesto chicken fetucinni dish (which by the way was massive and just what my grumbling stomach was after.) At that early stage of the night the bar was playing a slightly funkier version of elevator music. Okay ? not the most flattering descriptions but the music really was blah. Having said that, Fuel does have a certain ambience to it with plenty of areas for up close and personal encounters balanced by some open spaces for larger groups. The upstairs area has all these small balcony areas ? seemingly popular with the crowd even though it was absolutely freezing out ? that I would imagine give a view out onto Covent Garden itself. By 9.30 Fuel was getting busier, with most of the clients being the late 20s-30s professional, but the music wasn?t getting any better and so we left.

    The Incredibles 01 Incredibles 02 Incredibles 03

We ended up going on an extra long walk around Covent Garden, Leicester Square and up Regent Street to see the Christmas lights. Interestingly, they were themed on Disney?s The Incredibles (you know,

      the

animation of the Christmas season.) Rehana says there is always a theme but I guess I was just surprised to see such blatent marketing. I?m looking forward to see what else the Christmas season has to offer here in London. I just hope I don?t find myself at Oxford Street any time in the next 5 weeks ?
