the craze that is zumba

The world is zumba crazy at the moment. Well, at least Laney and Mei are absolutely obsessed with it! They invited me along tonight so I could join the craze … for those who have somehow missed the hype zumba is a new dance fitness program played out to Latin and pop music and borrowing moves from Latin dance including salsa, mambo, flamenco, samba and with belly dancing and hip hop thrown in.

The class is totally dominated by girls (e.g. tonight there were like two guys and nearly 30 girls) so lads – if you want to meet some ladies this is a fantastic opportunity. And .. even if the students aren’t eye candy enough for you, the instructor is normally quite hot and sexy. Classes tend to be oversubscribed so if you’re unfamiliar with the moves it would behoove you to stand right at the front of the class so you can see the instructor. And there are no prizes for holding anything back – you want to dance your socks off!

I did have a lot of fun tonight with the great music … but I’m not sure I’ll be a frequent attendant … my dancing is totally atrocious! 😉

LostInLondon: Halloween at the Coronet

Laney and my original plans for Halloween fell through but she managed to score some tickets to the Lost in London Halloween event at the Coronet. We had no idea what to expect but were promised some entertainment. The Coronet Theatre was supposedly the original venue when Michael Jackson made his first appearance in the UK .. .and he was supposed to make an appearance at the stroke of midnight …

We were also promised a couple of DJs up on the main stage, a couple of DJs in the Silent Disco, plus a giant snow machine, giant stilt walkers and trapeze artists. Well, we didn’t get all of that but we certainly got some entertainment on the stage in the form of some lady dancers!

Then they brought out fire

Interesting! We unfortunately didn’t see any of the stilt walkers or Michael Jackson – but the venue is huge and tonight it was super crowded so I’m not surprised we didn’t get around to everything. I eventually got home at 7am … and the night was made all the longer since the clocks went back an hour so it was actually 8am … I think its going to take me a few days to recover!

China City Karaoke

Karaoke is not really my ideal way to spend a couple of hours … but seeing as how I hadn’t seen some of the crew in a while I thought it couldn’t kill me to check it out.

Our venue for karaoke tonight was China City in Leicester Square where they have three private rooms available. The room that we were in was supposed to be able to fit 8-10 comfortably but was probably more comfortable with a maximum of six people as the eight of us were pretty crammed into the small space quite tightly. The added benefit of doing karaoke in a place like China City is that you can then also order dinner to go with your singing – food was okay.

The music selection on the karaoke was so-so – there were some current hits (including Lady Gaga which was quite the popular choice tonight) but not as many as I would have expected. We had two mics and mostly had to sit and sing from the couches. I enjoyed it more than I thought … mainly because the room was so small that I could get away with not singing! Ha ha!

D’s Leaving Do

In what is probably a blow to our workforce we see one of the key members of our staff departing to head over to Deloitte. I guess its not an unnatural step to see relatively newly-qualified staff start to look at their career to see where their next step up the ladder lies. In honesty our organisation is starting to look quite top-heavy and there isn’t a lot of room for progression so fair play to D!

A good night was had by all especially D, and especially after Laurence started the celebrations with a nice bottle of champagne. I think there was tequila featuring in the night at some stage too! Someone’s going to hav e asore head tomorrow!

Ronnie Scott’s

After a hard day of elephant hunting it was over to Ronnie Scott’s for a relaxing evening of jazz. Our session started quite late so Laney and I had a chance to go home for quick change of clothes (and a cheeky nap) between hunting and the jazz. It was eerily quiet on the streets when I was heading back into town because of the England game – made for a nice calm journey on the tube!

Ronnie Scott’s is popular as ever. Most people know to book ahead to make sure they get tickets for a show. The bouncer out the front wasn’t exactly friendly or helpful though so when everyone was lining up there was a bit of confusion as to who had pre-booked tickets (turns out most of us had) and who hadn’t. Seating is unreserved (except to the extent that you book a more expensive ticket for unrestricted view) and on a first come first serve but also at the host’s mercy. She/he will seat you wherever. We were lucky to be seated in the second row on the side so we had decent views.

Tonight’s warm up act were the James Pearson Trio who played for about 40 minutes. It felt like they played three really long tunes and all mainly with improvisation. It was very impressive and brings me back memories of when I used to play the alto sax in high school – though I was nowhere near as good as I hated to practise (mainly because I hated carrying my alto around!)

Gill Manly was the main act. I’m not all that familiar with the jazz scene so I didn’t really know who Gill was. She was presenting the Nina Simone songbook (complete with Nina Simone’s original drummer!) For a white lady Gill sure had an awesome voice! She was quite the character too and made for an entertaining evening. Her story of how she came to be singing for us tonight was touching and brought a real authenticity to the performance – you could tell she really loved and felt the music.

Supperclub

This should have been an exciting evening accompanied by decent grub and groovy music only it ended up kind of being a bit blah although Su Yin, Laney and I did try to make the most of it.

Supperclub is located in a very non-central out of the way position in Notting Hill. Its best described as being located at the end of what would be the Portobello Road markets and to the right a bit. Its not near any other restaurant, shop, pub but actually in what appears to have been an abandoned warehouse.

After taking our names at the front desk and being given red dot stickers to wear on our lapels we were taken by this gentleman (dressed in a white lab coat, bright yellow sneakers, yellow cap and matching yellow-died beard) into this giant white wall painted room. The walls were lined with beds. That’s right – beds. So ladies in those extremely short skirts and shoes which are a killer to get in and out of think hard about your apparel before you come to supperclub – I mean you’l have to take them off, then put them on (to mingle or go to the toilet), take them off, put them on etc … I think it would have been much more fitting if we’d been asked to wear some sort of slinky pjs and slippers …

The first impression you get walking into the venue is that you’re walking into an asylum: white walls, white sheets on the beds, a video projection on to the wall with the mental asylum videos, the waiters and waitresses in their white lab coats (upon which you could draw on at your leisure if you wanted!) and the random writing on the wall. Having said that, however, the lights in the room kept changing so actually what we saw was green, then red, then pink etc There is a giant gaping space in the middle – later we were to see it was used for entertainment but I also imagine when this club turns into a proper club it would be used for dancing and the like – but in the time we were there it was just a vast space.

Food is a “surprise” menu. Sometimes I think “surprise” is just a restaurant’s cheat way of making most of whatever ingredients they have on hand rather than planning a proper menu! Supperclub’s description of their food is thus:

Our amuses were a gazpacho, and a leek and gorgonzola tart. The gazpacho was weird but the tart was divine – though in fairness you can hardly say anything bad about such a combination – the full fat content after all should assure a well-flavoured dish – but it was hardly innovative. This was followed, nearly 20 minutes later, by our pre-starter of a vegetable medley soup (containing coriander, mushroom and a thai flavour). This wasn’t too bad but I found it strange that we would kind of have two liquid items in a row.

The next course, I guess what is the official starter, was to be another half an hour: smoked duck and sea bream terrine (odd!) and tomato bread. Not a favourite with me this one. Unfortunately it was to be further half hour before I got the next taste in my mouth our main of seared beef with some sort of Oriental influenced sauce, soba noodles and potato croquette. The cold soba noodles weren’t really to my liking but I have to admit the beef was well cooked, tender and nicely flavoured. Su Yin, not being a beef eater, got a vegetable terrine type thing – if I were her I wouldn’t have been happy!

And finally for dessert was a sorbet, chocolate and congac crumble with cream. This was apparently compiled in that big empty space in the middle I spoke of earlier but I was in the toilet at the time so didn’t really see what went on. I think it was just basically dishing it out into our little containers etc. so don’t think I missed much

Diet and allergy requirements aside everyone is pretty much having the same thing so it shouldn’t have been difficult to produce or manage the timing of the food. Instead at times some dishes were cold (when it should have been hot) or once not all of us got our food at the same time (Wagamama may be able to use the excuse the food is cooked fresh and delivered as completed – but I could hardly say that supperclub could use the same since we were all eating the same thing!) or seemed to take forever to come!

Food-wise I was expecting more though that’s not to say it wasn’t alright – it just wasn’t as mind-blowing as I was expecting I guess from the combo of the food we got and to the timing of delivery.

The other thing in the mix, and was a valid excuse for why food took a long time to come out between two of the courses was the entertainment. On the hour (so for us it happened at 9 and then 10) they had entertainment in the form of a burlesque dancer (actually – I’ve seen her before at Boom Boom Club) and a kind of burlesque fire throwing/swallowing by this dude dressed in drag. He was kind of awesome. Both acts probably lasted less than 5 minutes and was a good way to break up the time though it would have been nicer for more often and longer performances.

Staff at supperclub are for the most part friendly and actually at times entertaining though hard to get their attention sometimes because the place is so huge! The dude (in yellow everything) who brought us in was a particularly funny guy and boy could he salsa. He later gave us his resume but it read quite funny – all sorts of strange things that can’t be mentioned in this PG entry!

Overall I’m not a hundred percent convinced that supperclub were really at their 100% tonight – food was ordinary with glimmers of loveliness, entertainment was good but way to little of it, staff were friendly but hard to get a hold of at times, and the atmosphere, admittedly on a school night, was a bit dead even as we left at nearly 11.30 … value for money-wise we paid about £33 which I guess wasn’t too bad but was at a discounted offer ….

Mei’s Masquerade

Our little “bubble girl” as we affectionally call her as she is so innocent is growing up! To celebrate her birthday Mei decided to throw a masquerade party. I was looking forward to wearing the mask though I knew I had a challenge ahead of me with the fact I have no nose! but giant cheeks! LOL.

We all had a great night though it was boiling in the night club and it was really difficult to keep our masks on. At some stage some other girl absconded with mine cause she was too slack to bring her own! I wouldn’t have minded so much except I didn’t know her and she didn’t even ask me! How rude!

At any rate the all the photos here borrowed from everyone else. I didn’t think I needed to bring a camera – hey room full of asians – no camera required. 😉

Saturday evening at Edgware Road

I met Akh and Batool at Edgware Road for dinner tonight. As usual Edgware Road was a buzzing hive of activity and though I get the feeling it was not as busy as usual – it was busy enough so that we couldn’t get into Akh’s favourite restaurant for dinner! Still – its not like there isn’t a large range of restaurants up and down the block so we just went next door! Heh heh.

After dinner, however, we found some spots outside of the restaurant free so we sat down for some shisha. Akh’s mate was there, actually he just knows him from way back when Akh used to hang around during Uni, and at the end he was trying to get me to say thank you in his language. But I’m a bad student – I’ve forgotten already!

Thanks too for Batool for lending me her Twilight book!

Su Yin’s BBB Birthday

I haven’t been to BBB (Beach Blanket Babylon) for over a couple of years now even though its in my neighbourhood! I was glad that Su Yin chose it for her birthday drinks for exactly this reason – so I could stumble home afterwards …

Su Yin has been in London just probably about 18 months or so (not very long at all) but somehow she has amassed a giant number of friends. I met her at the tube at the start of the evening and when we got to BBB we were probably the first to arrive however it wasn’t very long that friend after friend after friend arrived to greet her. Though there was almost a revolving door of people coming to see her with people coming in and going out I don’t think I’d be wrong in saying that between maybe around 8 and 11 she probably had upwards of 30 people around at any one time.

Drinks-wise we had a waitress who looked kind of like Heather Locklear, she was very pretty, but she was very very good at taking orders. Now bearing in mind that there were a lot of, shall we say, people from far east asia here tonight she did well being able to find the owner of whatever drink people had ordered. She even remembered my order from the start of the night to the end of the night (yes I behaved and limited myself to two drinks).

Su Yin very generously put her card as a bar tab. I shudder to think just how large the bill would have been tonight! I saw her tucking money into her top (heh heh) but I doubt what people gave her would have covered it! At any rate it was clear that Su Yin had a wonderful time tonight – Happy Birthday Su Yin!
